Quartzite and quartz: what is the difference?

Natural quartzite and engineered quartz: different origins, characteristics and questions to ask before making your choice.

Natural quartzite

Quartzite is natural stone formed from metamorphosed sandstone. Real slabs vary in pattern and colour. A trade name alone does not identify the stone: confirm its classification and details.

Engineered quartz surfaces

Quartz surfaces are manufactured; they are not slabs of natural quartzite. Composition, finish and use instructions depend on the particular manufacturer. A marble-look design does not make the surface marble.

Before choosing

Ask for the full name and code, a photograph or sample of the actual slab, available technical data and written care instructions. Discuss heat, cleaners and possible sealing. Do not assume all quartzites have the same absorption.
