Everyday natural stone care

What to clean with, what to avoid and when a mark needs a different approach.

Everyday cleaning

Use a soft cloth and a neutral cleaner suitable for natural stone. Follow the dosage, rinse and dry. Excess cleaner leaves residue.

Marble, travertine and limestone

Avoid vinegar, lemon and acidic cleaners: they can dull or etch the surface. Use a chopping board and coasters in the kitchen, and a heat-resistant trivet for hot cookware.

Dealing with spills

Blot the liquid immediately without spreading it. Clean with a suitable mild product, rinse and dry. If a mark remains, identify the spilled substance before choosing a specialist cleaner.

Stain or loss of polish?

An absorbed stain and a dull acid-etched mark are different problems. Damage to the finish is not fixed with stronger cleaner. Ask a stone restoration specialist to assess it.

Floors and bathrooms

Remove sand and dust from floors regularly. Wipe away water after bathroom use. For limescale or soap residue, choose a product explicitly compatible with the particular stone.

Does the stone need sealing?

The need depends on the stone, treatment and use. An impregnating sealer may reduce absorption and staining, but does not make the surface damage-proof or stop acid etching on marble. Select the product and reapplication schedule for the particular surface.
